Talk to us

What we offer:

Common things students want to talk about:

essay and exam stress, loneliness, eating disorders, arguments with flatmates, depression, career path, rape, worries about a friend, bereavement, relationship breakdown, sexuality, abortion, alcohol and drug abuse, family problems, suicidal thoughts, housing concerns, self harm, debt, discrimination, sexual health... there is no problem too big or too small.

"Just as you try to eat your greens and go to the gym taking care of your emotional wellbeing is as vital for overall good health and quality of life. Yet it's something many of us neglect. Everyone goes through tough times - having the opportunity to talk about your problems without judgment or advice can help you make sense of your thoughts, put you back in control of them and allow you to learn from each experience."  Mark Goulbourne, Student Mental Health Practitioner and Counsellor and Nightline honorary mental health professional.  Visit his website: http://www.steppingstoneseast.com/index.html

Listening service

The main role of Nightline is to give students time and space to talk through whatever is on their mind no matter what it is. It doesn't matter if you just want a chat or if it's something you can't tell anyone else about. We don't pretend to have the answers but we care about what you're going through. Nightline is there when there is no-one else you can or want to turn to, or when it's the middle of the night and you need someone now.

“I’ve been to counseling but I’ve never been able to talk as much as I have to you. It helped so much.” Anonymous caller, University of Essex

"If something’s really bothering me – Nightline is a savior! There’s so much to deal with at university, even if you do have friends and family that will listen, there are some things you don’t feel you can talk to them about. It’s reassuring and comforting that the students at my uni understand that and care.” Anonymous caller

Call us

All Nightlines operate a telephone helpline, usually available all night every night 8pm-8am during term time, though some smaller Nightlines operate a restricted service.

Email us

If you find it easier to write than to talk send us an email.

1-1 message us

If you find it easier to write than to talk and want an immediate response start a 1-1 message conversation. The service works through a secure 1-1 web based messenger which allows you to ‘talk’ to a Nightline volunteer in real time. The service is supported by chatstat.com who provide the web based software free of charge.
“I found it really easy to talk to someone online. I’m quite nervous discussing things in person and I wouldn’t have otherwise talked to a Nightline volunteer. The online listening service meant that I could get the support I felt I needed without feeling embarrassed.” Anonymous caller, University of East Anglia

Some Nightlines give out supplies as part of their drop-in service. Emergency condoms, tampons, pregnancy tests, attack alarms, camp beds and crash accommodation can be bought, rented or are free from some Nightlines.

Additional services offered by Essex Nightline

Essex Nightline also offers:

  • a communal drop-in area with tea and toast so students can safely wait for taxis, chat about things on their mind or gather to talk if something universally upsetting happens, such as a student suicide.
  • separate male and female crash accommodation if a student can't get home safely and camp bed hire.
  • high dependency room for those who've had too much to drink to recover safely and under supervision.
